Westerhall Estate Ltd.

Grenada

About Us

Nestled in the southeastern corner of Grenada in the parish of St. David, Westerhall Estate traces its history back to the late 1700s when the original sugar-cane plantation, then known as Baccaye Estate, was purchased by Sir William Johnstone and renamed Westerhall. Over subsequent decades the site saw sugar production, spice cultivation (nutmeg, mace, limes) and eventually rum distilled as part of its operations. While the modern production dynamics have shifted, the estate retains visible reminders of its plantation and sugar-refinery past: water-wheels, copper kettles and sugar-press ruins are scattered through the gardens.

From a spirits perspective, Westerhall is known for producing rum expressions that draw on Grenada’s spice-rich terroir as well as the heritage of the site. Among its more notable brands you’ll find the “10 Year Old” and “XXO” aged rums, which are singled out by visitors and reviewers alike as stand-outs. For those visiting, Westerhall offers a relaxed, self-guided experience: stroll through the estate grounds, explore the small museum with artifacts from the sugar and rum era, and finish with a tasting in the shop where you can sample several of their rums and make purchases. It’s advisable to call ahead or check current opening hours, as the estate operates mainly Monday to Friday and parts of the site remain private.

In short, Westerhall Estate combines historical plantation architecture, an authentic sense of Grenada’s rum and spice culture, and a hands-on visitor experience, making it a worthy stop on the Caribbean Rum Trail for visitors who want a deeper look at how rum production and island heritage merge.
