Rum Producers Looking to Overcome Challenges and Deliver Anniversary Rum

The West Indies Rum & Spirits Producers Association (WIRSPA), members are seeking to address several challenges facing the industry, following a year of slower-than-expected growth in the premium rum segment.

Their concerns were raised, at a recent meeting, about potential trade instability in 2025, particularly due to shifting policies in the U.S. and Europe. Threats of tariffs from a new U.S. administration and uncertainties in Europe could pose significant risks to the regional industry. However, producers welcomed initiatives by CARIFORUM and CARICOM governments to examine trade arrangements which could open new markets for Caribbean rum, and they endorsed expeditious action in the face of the uncertainty expected in traditional markets.

Producers also highlighted progress in adopting consumer-friendly labelling across brands, part of a broader commitment to responsible alcohol consumption. These labels include information on serving sizes, calories, and warnings against underage drinking, driving while under the influence, and alcohol consumption during pregnancy.

While WIRSPA noted encouraging trends from the World Health Organisation regarding reductions in harmful alcohol use globally, members reaffirmed their dedication to increasing activities to promote responsible consumption, and to fostering a “whole-of-society” approach to reducing alcohol-related harm within the region.

In the coming weeks, the Association will be delivering the specially crafted 50th Anniversary rum blends, which they revealed at a meeting earlier this year, to CARICOM Heads of Governments. These unique blends, created by 13 WIRSPA members, commemorate the golden jubilee of regional integration, and highlight the importance of the rum industry to the Caribbean’s economic and cultural fabric. The commemorative blends were produced to celebrate CARICOM’s milestone anniversary and promote premium Caribbean rums.

Earlier this year, when the Heads gathered in Grenada to commemorate the Caribbean Community’s 50th Anniversary, WIRSPA presented them with samples of the product. This time, WIRSPA members will deliver to each CARICOM government, 20 cases of the Anniversary rum blend which they are expected to use at national events and distribute to their embassies abroad to underscore the significance of regional integration and showcase rum as CARICOM’s premier export product.

Margaret Monplaisir, Chairperson of WIRSPA, remarked: “These anniversary blends represent not only the creativity and craftsmanship of our producers, but also the strength and unity of the Caribbean. They symbolize our shared heritage, and are a testament to the integral role rum plays in supporting economic growth and promoting our region’s global identity.”
